A 24-year-old Houston teacher who confessed to having sex with her then 13-year-old student was arrested on Wednesday for repeated sexual abuse.
Alexandria Vera, a former teacher at Stovall Middle School, turned herself inafter police issued a warrant for her arrest, New York’s Daily News reports. Vera has been charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child. (Texas law makes an encounter between a 24-year-old and a 13-year-old statutory rape.) Court documents, via The Houston Chronicle, state that she met the boy, who’s now 14, when he was a student in her English class.
Vera reportedly started seeing the teen off school grounds in September 2015 and became pregnant with his child in January. Vera allegedly told a campus officer about the relationship in May during an investigation and confessed to having sex with him “on almost a daily basis.” According to ABC News 13:
Vera claims she and the teen are in love, and she’s been introduced to his family as his girlfriend, court documents state. The boy’s parents are reportedly accepting of the relationship, including Vera in family gatherings.
The family, according to court documents, approved of her having his baby. Via ABC:
But after an unexpected visit to the school by Child Protective Services in February, when Vera and the boy were questioned about their relationship, she reportedly became nervous and terminated the pregnancy.
Students reported seeing interactions between Vera and the student in classrooms. One student told ABC, “He like grabbed her butt, and everybody saw it. And then they were talking about it.”
The Aldine Independent School District cited their knowledge of Vera’s “inappropriate behavior” and issued a statement that reads in part: “When the allegation was made in April, the teacher was immediately removed from the school and placed on administrative leave.”
Video shows Vera leaving court today and responding to questions from reporters with “No comment.”
